Promoting Heritage

Incorporated in 1987 as a registered charitable society, the Friends of Geographical Names of Alberta Society promotes the awareness of Alberta's place name heritage.

We also support toponymic research and the services of the Geographical Names Program of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit. A unique association between our two very distinct organizations has resulted in a lasting and rewarding relationship beneficial to our common mandate of sustaining Alberta's geographical place name heritage.

Did you know that when you read a map you're actually reading history? If you look behind the names of places on your map, the lives of our ancestors and their patterns of settlement, exploration and migration come to life. While providing common reference points for travelers and cartographers, Alberta's place names reflect our province's rich cultural heritage.

As a society, we promote the heritage of Alberta's place names through our various projects.
