Coaldale
Town
82 H
Approximately 10 km east of Lethbridge.
This town grew around a railroad siding, which was named after the nearby residence of Elliott T. Galt. This residence had been named Coal Dale to distinguish it from the nearby
Coal Banks (now Lethbridge.) Elliott Galt was the son of Sir Alexander T. Galt (1817-1893), one of the Fathers of Confederation. Galt, Senior was the founder and manager of the North Western Coal and Navigation Co. Ltd., later called the Alberta Railway and Coal Company,
the company that provided the base for Lethbridge's creation and continued survival.
