Chestermere Lake
Lake
82 P
Approximately 15 km east of Calgary.
Chestermere Lake was known as Kinniburgh Slough until 1906, when an intermittent lake
was dammed to create the reservoir for the Canadian Pacific Railway irrigation project. There are varied accounts for the origin of the name. Some say it was named for a Lord Chester, a Director of the CPR. Others say it was named for Lord Chestermere. Another version suggests that some of the early settlers came from Chesterville Ontario and Nova
Scotia, and decided on the present name in preference to Kinniburgh Slough. See also Chestermere (town).
