Castle Mountain
Mountain
82 O
Approximately 30 km northwest of Banff.
Sir James Hector (see Mount Hector) named this 2862 m mountain in 1857 for its fortress-like appearance. In 1946, at the demand of Prime Minister Mackenzie King, the name was changed in Mount Eisenhower in honour of General Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War. This was in honour of the General's visit to Canada that year. The replacing of a long-standing descriptive name never sat well with Albertans and Canadians as a whole. From 1946 on, Canadians kept up steady pressure with the result that the name was officially changed back to Castle Mountain on October 15, 1979. On Castle Mountain you will find Eisenhower Peak .
