Cardston
Town
82 H
Approximately 65 km south south-west of Lethbridge.
Named for Charles Ora Card (1839-1906) who came to the present site of Cardston, on Lees Creek in 1886 from Utah. He was the son-in-law of Brigham Young and he wanted to establish a new home for members of the Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). The following year, the main contingent, consisting of ten families arrived and took up squatter's rights; the official Dominion Land Survey not yet having been done. A preliminary survey was done by the Mormons and J.S. Dennis, DLS, resurveyed the land in the
fall of 1887. Cardston was granted a post office in 1892, became a village in 1898, and a town in 1901. Ora Card was the town's first mayor.
