Bruderheim
Town
83 H
Approximately 37 km north-east of Edmonton.
The name of this community and town was originally the name chosen by and for the congregation of the Moravian Colony at this place. The original German spelling is for most other languages an awkward one. The umlaut over the "u" in Brüderheim caused much distress in interpretation for government agencies at the time of naming in 1895. By
leaving out the umlaut, however, the meaning was changed. Andreas Lilge and the Moravian settlers selected the name which means "brethren home" for their congregation and projected community. The Moravian church was often referred to as the "Bretheren's Church." This colony was composed of migrants from Poland to Volynia, Russia who emigrated to Alberta and settled in 1894. The post office opened in September 1895. The Village of Bruderheim was incorporated in September 1980.
