Balinhard, Mount

Mountain
83 C

Approximately 54 km east south-east of Jasper, elevation 3130 m.

This mountain was officially named in 1925 after one of the titles held by the Earl of Southesk, Baron Balinhard. In the spring of 1859, James Carnegie, the 9th Earl of Southesk, at the age of 32 left England for Rupertsland in British North America in an attempt to help his ailing health. He was a literate person, spending his evenings after a long day on the trail reading Shakespeare and writing in his journal. He of course was not alone, for he was properly outfitted with horses, dogs, guns, as well as trained guides and trackers. After extensive exploration of the Rockies and Foothills areas, his party returned to Fort Edmonton on October 12th, 1859. Here he drafted Saskatchewan and the Rocky Mountains describing his travels along the mighty river to the mountains. This book was not published until 1875.
